Succession Planning: Best Practices to Implement and Pitfalls to Avoid

Many farmer business owners spend their lifetime building and investing in their business, but spend very little time thinking and planning how they will someday pass on the business or exit it. By the time they realize they need a plan for transitioning or exiting, it's simply too late.  One of the most cited reasons that most business transitions fail is due to the business owner not properly planning for that transition.

Join us and PA Farm Link for this free webinar as we explore some key elements needed in a successful transition as well as what pitfalls to avoid in the planning process.

In this webinar, we'll cover:

  • Key elements needed for a successful and sound farm transition
  • Pitfalls to avoid in the farm transition planning process
  • Examples of farm family transitions

This webinar will be recorded and made available to all registrants afterwards. If you have any questions you'd like our presenters to answer during the meeting, please email them to

Brenda O’Brien was born and raised on a large dairy farm in Central New York. She worked side by side with her father and learned about farm finances. While she was earning a Bachelor’s in Economics and Management from the State University of New York at Cortland, she began managing the farm finances, human relations, and herd management aspects of the farm business.

She later moved to Northern Virginia where she worked for the United State Department of Agriculture and then for Maryland & Virginia Milk Cooperative. Brenda continued her education, earning her Master’s degree in Counseling, which has proven to be invaluable with her work for more than 20 years in her church community and adult education.

She is a trained facilitator in both Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid. With her lifelong experience in agriculture, working on the family farm, and caring for her five children, Brenda brings a unique and valuable perspective to NY FarmNet.

This webinar is in collaboration with PA Farm Link, NY FarmNet, AgChoice Farm Credit and the staff who make it their mission to help farming families transition their operations from one generation to the next.
