Tasty Tuesday: MidAtlantic Grown

We’ve all heard it a million times, but it’s true! A balanced breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you’re doing it right, a good breakfast will help boost your energy and get you ready to take on the day. So, why not eat something that is delicious, nutritious, AND supports your local farmers?

1. Milk

Drink a glass of milk in the morning for a boost of calcium and potassium for healthy bones and healthy blood pressure!

South Mountain Creamery is located in Middletown, MD sells their milk and ice cream to locals through their on-farm store, website, and local farmers’ markets. They also have a delivery service where customers can place their order online for South Mountain’s milk, ice cream, and other products along with other locally sourced foods like meat, eggs, bread, and more.

2. Bacon

Bacon acts as a source of protein!

Edgegrove Farm, located in Purceville, VA, raises heritage Berkshire pork, which means outstanding bacon! They also raise other animals including chickens, turkeys, beef cattle, and sheep. Their products are sold by order on their website.

3. Toast

A slice of whole grain toast can help supply you with the dietary fiber you need to help you feel full in the morning!

Seylou Bakery & Mill is located in Washington, D.C., and they were D.C.’s first entirely whole grain bakery. They offer a variety of fresh breads and pastries made from locally grown grains.

4. Eggs

Eggs are a good source for protein! Protein acts as the building blocks for many different parts of your body like bones, muscle, etc.

Klein Farms Dairy & Creamery is located in Easton, PA, where they run their family dairy farm. In their farm store, they offer brown eggs, chicken, beef, milk, cheese, ice cream, and more locally grown products from their farm and neighboring farms.

5. Cheese

Cheese is another source of calcium that will build healthy bones and teeth!

Chesapeake Bay Farms is located in Pocomoke City, MD. They are a farm store specializing in gourmet cheeses, ice cream, and milk that come from their family farm-the only dairy farm in Worcester County, as well as a few other locally grown items like fresh produce. You can also find them at several local farmers’ markets in the area.

6. Strawberries

Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C and help keep a strong immune system!

Evans Farm Produce, located in Bridgeville, DE, sells their produce alongside other locally sourced products in their store, creamery, and at several farmers’ markets. Their strawberries, watermelon, and other produce can also be found in grocery stores like Giant, Harris Teeter, and Redner’s Warehouse Markets.

7. Not pictured, but recommended, is a serving of vegetables in the morning.

Try adding some sweet red bell peppers to your omelet, or add some spinach to your breakfast casserole. Depending on your choice, you’ll add vitamins and nutrients like Vitamin A, C, Iron, Potassium and Fiber! Whatever you decide, check out a local farmers’ market to find your fresh veggies!
