Fresh Perspectives: Rebecca Gurley

Think about one person that has made a difference in your life. Mentors come in all shapes, sizes and walks of life. Maybe you thought about a family member, a religious figure, or a colleague. These people come into our lives to teach us lessons about ourselves, others and about life.

They encourage you to be the best person you can be.

We are proud to recognize Rebecca Gurley of Sparks, Maryland as a Fresh Perspectives top 100 honoree in the category of Mentoring and Volunteerism.

Rebecca and her husband established Calvert’s Gift Farm in 1995 as a 7-acre certified organic farm, and now, more than 20 years later, she and her husband are working towards building a brighter future for their community.

The pair has been inspiring and educating the next generation of ag through the Future Harvest CASA’s Beginner Farmer Training Program since the mentor program began in 2006. In the past 10 years, the Gurleys have mentored more than 40 beginning farmers and directly support the establishment of more than 20 new farms.

More recently, they have founded a local, farmer owned food hub, Chesapeake Farm to Table, specializing in providing urban communities access to new rural farmers. The hub engages former mentees, currently 17 local orchards and meat producers, to offer and support a full line of local farm products available to be ordered online. The hub then coordinates the delivery of the products twice a week to Baltimore restaurants, year-round. Within the first year, the Food Hub sold more than $75,000 worth of products and is now planning further expansion of their distribution to Washington D.C.

But it doesn’t stop there.

The hub also plans future growth in the way of providing marketing training to new farmers and providing further support to the bottom line of small-scale farmers. “I want the new farmers to have and use a ready-made market for their products through Chesapeake Farm to Table,” Rebecca says.

When it comes to mentorship, Rebecca and her husband don’t take the challenge lightly and we thank them for encouraging our next generation to be the best farmers they can be.

Please help us congratulate Rebecca and her husband by sharing the article, following them on social media and visiting their website!
